John Cooks - Aussie burger...with a euro twist

Cooking and food is a part of so many cultures around the world and when travelling you can see how much of an important role food plays in peoples lives. I believe that learning and understanding as much as we can about food is vital from a young age. Getting in the kitchen gives us an understanding about different ingredients, where they come from and a sense of healthy homemade cooking which is so important.

In Italy, life revolves around food and cooking, and I have seen how many of my students know so much about food. This comes down to the fact that the kitchen is the most important room in the house and children learn about food and cooking not only from their parents but also from their grandparents. The famous nonnas!

However, it's also fun to experience different foods from around the world and try different ingredients which you are not so familiar with. So, I've come up with a recipe designed for kids and teenagers so they can get in the kitchen, cook and learn english along the way. This dish isn't Italian at all, but it's bursting with flavour, and gives you that little Aussie taste....with a European twist. Let's go guys!

Vocabulary (English - Italian)

Chop - Tritare

Bowl - Ciotola

Minced - Carne macinata

Grate - Grattugiare

Patties - Polpette

Take - Prendere

Baking tray - Teglia

Slices - Fette

Ingredients (8 burgers)

- 400g minced beef/turkey

- A bunch of herbs (sage, thyme, mint)

- 1 apple

- 1 red onion

- Burger buns

- 1 egg (optional)

- 1 red pepper (optional)

- 1 Avocado (optional)

- Tomatoes (optional)

- Bacon (optional)

- Cheese (You can do a mix, brie, maasdam, leerdammer)

Method (BBQ needed)

* Remember you should always have an adult with you supervising!

1. Chop the red onion and put into a big bowl with the minced beef or turkey

2. Chop all the herbs together and put into the bowl

3. Grate half an apple and put into the bowl

4. Add salt and pepper and mix everything together

5. Add 1 egg if the mixture is too dry. The egg will help to keep the patties together

6. After you have mixed everything together, start to make the patties. Take a small portion with your hand and mould into a pattie. Put them onto a plate or a baking tray.

7. Leave the patties to rest for about an hour.

8. Prepare your toppings for the burgers:

- Slice the cheese you want

- Slice the avocado

- Slice the tomatoes

9. When the bbq is hot, put your burgers on. Cook on each side for about 3-5 minutes or until golden brown.

10. Put the slices of bacon on the bbq (these won't take long!).

11. Cut the burger buns in half and slightly toast them on the bbq.

12. Put your burger together!

Choose you toppings! Sliced grilled peppers are delicious!

This is a fun, easy recipe for friends and family! You can change your ingredients and really make it your own!
